Making Money Has No Age

Financial experts suggest the need to start investing at a young age so you have monetary support when you are older. What they do not share is that it takes at least 50 years of wisdom, experience and financial wit to put the right business investments together. Here is what I believe happens to persons who believe in invest early, work hard while young and take business risks at a young age. Most of those persons reach age 40, look around realizing that they have not amassed incredible wealth and normally quit on life, their financial quest and simply settle for their current state. I have been thought to invest early, take business risks at a young age, perfect my financial prowess and as I get older, let these experiences guide me to take greater business risks, invest at a mature age, navigate using my financial prowess and teach others along the way. So? If you are 50, 60, 70, 80, 90,100 or at any age and still breathing, it’s a good time to build your financial wealth. Making money has no age.

Check Those Plans!

How are we doing with our New Year’s Resolutions? Well, it’s April and the fourth month into the year is the point where persons really activate plans or put them to rest, actually. In two months, June, we will reach the halfway point of another year and having accomplished some of our goals will be a true sign of how well we do for the balance of the year. So, if we have not started on our road to weight loss or increased our financial standings then April is the month to gather steam and forge ahead. Remember while our plans change (the only constant in life!), we should not alter our goals to reflect our current situation if we have not begin working toward our goals. Simply start! Keep the original plan and work toward achieving original goals. Great dreams can be realized! Take one small step at a time and celebrate small milestones on your way to bringing the greater goal to fruition.

Intellect is Relative: How Smart Are You?

The complex nature of normal thoughts when interpreted by regular minds might result in different thoughts by complex minds. It then becomes evident that your mind is the most powerful tool, which when not exercised, can create normal activities, which when interpreted by some might actually be complex. Confused???

What I am saying is intellect is relative. Wisdom comes from many people at many levels of life regardless of age, sex, race, religious affiliation or socioeconomic status. Follow me closely!

Often times we believe our intellect surpasses others until we meet someone smarter. That person then meets a five year old who has mastered the completion of a video game at lightning speed. The five year old meets a fourth grader who can perform five digit multiplication. The fourth grader listens to a conversation with their big brother in college explaining calculus to a friend. The college student pays for a ticket to hear Warren Buffet speak about the economy analyzing the works of Adam Smith, Hyman Minsky, or John Keynes. Or how about Shawn Carter who affiliates with Warren Buffet explaining his pattern of rhythmic poetry which is often times not understood by a scholar of Shakespeare. Or the lover of Shakespeare who finds a rare piece of art by Basquiat and donates it to his local Goodwill where it is bought by a scholar of war for ten dollars. The war scholar then sells the painting for thousands, to his surprise, and uses some of the money to buy his five year old son a video game.

Get it? Intellect is relative and knowledge is a continuous cycle of learning. You can learn from everyone and in every situation. Don’t discount the wisdom others may be able to impart unto you. Don’t discount your intellectual contributions to the lives of others. Continue to explore and expand your levels of understanding.

H.T.I.A.F.

Sometimes it’s at your quietest moment or a point where life appears to be at its lowest when a breath invigorates you or a hand stretches out to you to say all will be well or here is your answer. We all face it, moments when our faith and hope are challenged and we even question the very source of our beliefs.

This message is to quietly whisper to the world, words of hope and confidence. A quick, concise and direct message to let persons know you are not alone in any of your situations. As you search for your answers, the person next to you is also figuring out their next move. I too am figuring out my next move. These moments are merely the ingredients of a wonderful story waiting to be written.

So, my message is to let you know that courage, faith and all the rudiments of perseverance still exist. They are ever so critical as we see a changing world where what was simple perhaps two years ago now appears complex. Therefore, find a quiet place of resolve where another stretch of your faith can be joined by mine, his, hers, and theirs. Keep your faith alive as it is the ingredient when married with action which opens doors, provide jobs, relieves financial problems, finds love and allows us another chance to add to the stories that will later encourage and support others.

The Deluxe Apartment in the Sky

There was a show called the Jeffersons that depicted the success of a particular family. The theme song centered around reaching the heights of a “deluxe apartment in the sky” or achieving their version of success. It celebrated this family’s particular accomplishment of living at a level which was above their previous. Seeing this show at the time seemed like it was okay to celebrate the success to the elevated apartment. As I became older, I pondered the message of that show and wondered whether we limit ourselves by reaching only for  apparent goals in front of us rather than reaching for larger goals. Why not the “deluxe house in suburbs “? Now, maybe I am overreacting about the Jeffersons and, frankly, I cannot remember much about the show but do know that while goals must be realistic and specific they must allow you to dream beyond the societal norm of success. The world is hiring goal breakers and persons not content with their current state but willing to reach beyond visible boundaries in an attempt to become successful and inspire others. So my message really is about not limiting your goals and dreams. Do not stop at the deluxe apartment in the sky; rather become the owner of the building. “Always reach for a goal beyond that which appears visibly achievable”. The world is hiring goal breakers and success climbers so get ready for your interview.

Sticks and Stones: Don’t let words divide

You may have heard the old adage “sticks and stones can break my bones but words cannot hurt me”.  A few days ago I became consumed with a heated dialogue with one of my colleagues about “people hurting people”. He maintained his  position that someone can hurt another person’s feelings with their words.  I argued with him that only physical things can hurt the person of another. To further expand, I explained that your interpretation or receipt of a person’s actions which might create emotional hurt is a personal responsibility and not that of the other person. If words were capable of hurting ones feelings then everyone would feel the same pain from the same words  as if struck by a baseball bat. I am not saying that people don’t say mean and derogatory words or some relationship are not filled with unhealthy language.   What I am saying is how you interpret those words, then and only then, can your feelings create your own hurt. I say all of this to say, stay free from persons who choose language that is not conducive to success. Only surround yourselves with people that speak positive words. This might mean looking for new “friends” or analyzing all of your relationships at work, church, school or even socially. Therefore, never tell someone that they have  hurt you with words. That’s your responsibility to develop the right environment, relationships and sphere where you are most free from “sticks and stones” and where words as “you” interpret them won’t hurt you. Ponder this!

No Birthday Celebrations

A few days ago, I reached a significant enough age that my friends and associates thought it important to ask when is the big party? When I got close enough to one of my better friends who insisted that I have a huge party to celebrate my accomplishment, I sat her down and explained that I don’t have huge celebratory parties when I reach a specific age because it simply celebrates getting older and somehow tells the world indirectly who you are and provides an opportunity to be judged. She quickly noted that she did not understand. I informed her that I celebrate milestones and accomplishments and not age. I believe the successful person celebrates life and milestones while others merely celebrate birthdays. I am not saying not to give thanks for your added life. What I am saying is celebrating an age is similar to receiving an award for years of service on the job. Whether good or bad service, you get the reward. My belief is in rewarding accomplishments and achievements which are measurable and transferable in lessons. So the next time you plan a big birthday party, ask yourselves if you have achieved something more than another year unto your life. My belief is in having big parties for accomplishments and milestones, celebrating them throughout life, while having a quiet moment with close friends and family to reflect and acknowledge another year of life. See you at the next milestone/accomplishment celebration. Drinks on me!
